About Mary Preece
I am a NSW South Coast artist and arts educator, originally from Victoria.
My practice is varied and includes basketry, drawing, sculpture and printmaking.
The baskets and sculptural forms made from natural and locally sourced materials are inspired by research into and documentation of the flora of the Shoalhaven. Family heritage, too, plays its part: my maternal grandmother was a CWA basketry demonstrator in Victoria and my great-great-great grandfather was a rope spinner.
Drawing has always been a foundation for me, in particular, observational drawing. Printmaking and sculpture are significant expressive forms.
Most of my practice is influenced by a life-long love of nature and the environment, passed on to me by my parents. The woven, coiled and constructed forms displayed here are the result of investigative studio processes.
